What does your membership with the

Funeral Consumer Society of Colorado support?

  • Our commitment to providing basic information about the various funeral providers in Colorado, including price comparisons for direct cremation and immediate burial.

  • Our ever-expanding consumer education and outreach efforts. Through publicity and educational materials, our mission is to increase consumer awareness about funeral practices and issues.  An educated funeral consumer knows all of their options and is equipped to make wise decisions without overspending.

  • Speakers to address any interested groups on various end-of-life topics, particularly those regarding body disposition and funeral planning.

  • Support via email and phone when you are making funeral arrangements.

  • Periodic newsletters that provide members with up-to-date information.

  • Monitoring of state and federal funeral legislation, advocating for consumer protection in funeral affairs, in collaboration with our national Funeral Consumer Alliance (FCA). This activity benefits both members and non-members alike.

  • Funeral Consumer Advocacy through the FCA, which serves as a national clearing house for consumer complaints in funeral transactions. We can facilitate their help in filing a complaint with the appropriate state and federal agencies for you.

However, it is emphasized that FCSC is not:

  • A society that directs people to discounted services, though we will help you locate the most affordable options in your area.

  • A funeral home, and we do not provide funeral insurance or funeral prepayment plans.

  • A charitable organization, as we do not have funds to help defray funeral expenses, though we are able to direct you to possible funds available through individual counties.

  • A decision-maker for its members or a repository for their end-of-life documents, which should remain with the author, his or her family, the attorney of record, and others.

  • An adversary of the funeral industry in general.

Membership Rates Update:

In the summer of 2021 membership rates were raised to $20 per person per two-year period. The FCSC has not raised rates in many years, and this decision was made to account for our true cost of operations. We appreciate your continued support of our work to educate funeral consumers in the state of Colorado!

New Funeral Provider Price Survey:

Check out our new (in-process) Funeral Provider Price Survey so that you, too, can become an educated consumer. If you need personalized help, we are always available to you by phone or email. Dependent children are covered under a parent's membership at no additional cost.  Dues may be waived in cases of true hardship. Transferees are subject to the same terms as new members.

Member Handbook:

This valuable resource provides information to help members plan their arrangements and helps survivors carry out those plans.  A hard copy of the handbook is included with each new membership. Additional handbooks or electronic copies may be purchased HERE.  Topics include:  What to do when someone dies, the need for estate planning, medical powers of attorney, living wills, body donation, organ donation, simple or elaborate burial arrangements, cremation, veterans' rights, advance directives and memorial services.

This 60-page Handbook has over 50 subjects listed in its table of contents; it can be kept for future reference by  friends or relatives.  We strongly urge individuals to use these valuable tools.  There is now a 20% discount available to groups purchasing 10 or more copies (plus postage).

GOOD WORDS FROM CURRENT MEMBERS

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Just a note to let you know that one of your life members, Roger Lawrence Williams, Laramie, died on July 4. Upon his death, I inquired in my capacity as Roger’s personal representative with the local funeral home as to its fees for immediate cremation and was quoted “about $2,800.” I then called Bohlender’s in Ft. Collins and was quoted the exact fee listed in your most recent newsletter: $995. Both Bohlenders were extraordinarily friendly, helpful, and just plain decent. They charged an extra $70 for transporting the body to Ft. Collins; can’t imagine what the local operator would have charged. I wish more people knew about the Funeral Consumer Society, though I’m pretty sure that an acquaintance here in Laramie will join the Society, or at least pre-pay a funeral with Bohlender’s.

John F. Freeman

(also a life member)

To Whom It May Concern,

I would just like to tell you how pleased I am with Jim Stork's handling of my wife's funeral arrangements.  He was very caring, helpful, reasonable on prices, and just a good guy to deal with.  I'm glad I am a member of the Funeral Consumer Society which enabled me to save thousands of dollars in funeral expenses compared to other funeral homes.  It's interesting to note that most other funeral home operators never heard about the Funeral Consumer Society when I mentioned it.  Thank you you for providing an excellent service to the citizens of Colorado.  I've reached out to USAA Insurance and Porter Hospice to make them aware of your organization.

Regards,

Bob Czarnecki

Thank you for your progressive and intelligent information. It made final arrangements a few years ago for my Aunt Pegg stress-free  (through Stork's ❤️)...

On June 7th my mom, Lillian, passed... I'm so grateful for you and Storks... it's a blessing to be prepared.

Supportive help for a gentle transition on a final journey...
